Vanessa Galvez is a trailblazing civil engineer who focuses on sustainability and inclusion. She is driven by a deep connection to her roots and a passion for improving the world. Vanessa, the daughter of Salvadorian immigrants, grew up in the vibrant and diverse neighborhood of Queens, New York. From a young age, she loved taking things apart to see how they worked—an early sign of her future in engineering.

Although engineering always intrigued her, a documentary on the devastating levee failures during Hurricane Katrina sparked her specific interest in civil engineering. Determined to make a difference, Vanessa became the first in her family to attend college, earning her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering in 2012.

Vanessa's career took off at a pivotal moment: Hurricane Sandy had just unleashed $19 billion worth of damage on New York City. As a resident engineer for the New York City Department of Design and Construction, she immediately put her skills into rebuilding and protecting her beloved city. Four years later, at 26, Vanessa was already leading significant projects, including a $3.8 million initiative to construct 164 bioswales in Maspeth, Queens. These innovative green infrastructure projects are designed to absorb runoff water, helping to prevent urban flooding and improve water quality—one more way Vanessa is helping to build a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
